Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain has secured winning a medal on her first appearance in the 75kg weight class. She won an unbeaten (3-2) victory over Valentina Khalzova during the Asian Boxing Championships in Amman, Jordan. Lovlina only needed one victory in the five-boxer field to ensure herself at least a bronze, and the 25-year-old fought trying to get that bronze with Kazakh’s Khalzova in the quarterfinals in the late hours of Saturday evening. This Assam boxer claimed the bronze medal with a weight of weight category of 69kg at the Tokyo Olympics. She has now switched to 75kg as her previous weight class isn’t part of the Paris Olympics. Ankushita Boro (66kg) was also advancing into the semifinals of the tournament. The 22-year-old scored an impressive 5-0 win against Japan’s Tsubata Arsia in the final eight stages. It was, however, the final straw in the case of Pooja (70kg), who was defeated 0-5 against Kazakhstan’s Dariga Shakimova in her final eight matches. The day before, on Saturday, the newcomers Minakshi (52kg) as well as Preeti (57kg), along with Olympic bronze medallist Parveen, were confirmed for the semifinals.
